One More from Mission Trails

There doesn’t need to be a lot of change from a ‘normally exposed’ image (top) and an HDR image (bottom). It depends on the scene and the ‘look’ you’re going for. Blending the images can be as simple as enabling one to capture more detail in highlights or shadows that just wasn’t in the ‘normal’ exposure alone. Some scenes also lend themselves more (or less) to the various effects in Photomatix. Even the $39 Photomatix Essentials can be a powerful tool in your image editing arsenal.

This scene was talen from the trail along the edge of the grasslands area of the park looking towards Oak Creek trail in the mid-ground with Old Mission Dam off to the Left (not visible)

Thought I’d go for a hike yesterday and take some shots to use/experiment with Photomatix Essentials HDR software. Light is less than optimal mid-day and the top image is the ‘normal’ exposure which was bracketed by 1 stop brighter & 1 darker. The software blends the images in different ways for many different effects which can all be modified. The 2nd image is a ‘natural’ fusion of the 3 exposures, the 2nd is the ‘Painterly 3’ setting, and the last one is a modified ‘Painterly’ setting that I later blended the normal exposure sky into (with partial transparency) using Corel PhotoPaint and then darkened the whole image just a bit with the Tone Curve tool.
